The dynamic rhythmic counterpoint of one theme is felt against the melodic and harmonic sadness of the other theme. The piano is an ideal instrument to express the rhythmic intensity of this piece with its percussive qualities is capable of achieving the illusion all pianists strive for: the cantabile.
